  • It is a great time to own a laptop computer today because we really have so many options available to us as far as upgrades and what we can actually do with laptops.

Obviously wireless networking and wireless Internet are some of the most desirable features in a laptop computer these days and why not. The ultra portability of a laptop goes perfectly hand in hand with the portable functionality of wireless networking.

Most of our laptops under $400 do have wireless capabilities already but if they don’t it is easy enough to upgrade with a USB wireless network adapter. This is definitely a simple DIY computer repairs upgrade that anybody should be able to accomplish.

Often the amount of RAM, or system memory, is 3GB or 4GB and if it is less then that it is quite often just a matter of doing a simple upgrade. However there is such a thing as more memory than you really need. This is where you can help to save yourself some money.

As a general rule of thumb it is recommended that if you are using Microsoft Windows Vista on your laptop than you should have at least 1GB of RAM, system memory.

If you are using Windows XP then you should have 512MB installed for basic general computing such as office productivity, email, playing music, and surfing the web.

The reason why you need more RAM, system memory, is because Vista as an operating system simply requires more memory in order to function at an acceptable speed meaning how responsive it is when you are using your laptop. In other words speed.

This is just how Vista was designed so it is perfectly normal but if you run Vista with less than 1GB of memory you will have a more sluggish laptop.

Dual core processors will work with both Windows XP and with Windows Vista. There have been some questions about this but the best way to understand it is that the operating system will actually see both cores one the chip. This means that you can easily see in the Device Manager that the operating system will show two processors when you have a dual core processor in your computer.
