When you are looking at your system resources you are viewing memory and processor usage. This is great for both benchmarking and troubleshooting as well.

The easiest way to take a look at your system resources is to right click on your Task Bar and choose Task Manager. In here you can also choose to view many aspects of what is going on behind the scenes in your Windows operating system.

When I am troubleshooting a laptop or desktop via a remote connection one of the first things I will do is open up the Task Manager. This is in order to see how many processes are running, what the CPU usage is, what the RAM usage is, what applications are running, and which files are using up an unusual amount of these resources. System resources are basically processor and memory usage.

This is a great way to track down a troublesome application or to identify spyware. Most of the remote service work we do is spyware related these days. We also do quite a lot of wireless network troubleshooting calls. This is where the remote troubleshooting can get a bit challenging but if I didn’t stay challenged things would not be as fun.

If you ever decide to watch your system resources you may find that the laptop CPU usage will sit idle with no activity and then all of a sudden you may see a big jump in CPU usage. Don’t be alarmed because this is perfectly normal. There are a lot of things going on with the computer and the operating system even when it seems like there isn’t anything going on.

You will notice that the System Idle Process will hold the CPU at 99 and never 100 this means there is not much going on. At this point run your finger along the touch pad or move your USB mouse if you are using one. You will see the CPU usage respond to you just moving the mouse. You have basically just grabbed the processor’s attention. No big deal but this should give you a better idea of how to watch for things that may be an issue during troubleshooting.
